Why is this called 'conservative'?

It removes single-line // comments and blank lines, and collapses leading whitespace, but it deliberately does NOT remove block comments, strings, or alter ASI-sensitive newlines. It also does not mangle variables or dead-code-eliminate.

Are strings and template literals preserved?

Yes. The tokenizer tracks single-quote, double-quote and backtick strings (with escape sequences) and copies them verbatim. Template literal newlines are preserved.

Does it handle regex literals?

Not specially. A regex like /foo//bar/ would be misread — the // would be treated as a comment. For production code, use a real minifier like esbuild or terser.

What does Beautify do?

It minifies first, then re-formats with one statement per line, indented by brace depth. It's a simple pretty-printer — not as sophisticated as Prettier.
